Prerequisites: Preparatory Rudiments or Equivalent

The Basic Rudiments course is a gentle introduction to the Rudiments of Music. In the Rudiments of Music, students learn about basic music notation, and concepts such as clefs, time signatures, rhythms intervals and chords.

Basic Rudiments builds on the Preparatory Rudiments program. Students should be able to negotiate both the treble clef and the bass clef up to three ledger lines.  If in doubt, review the material in Preparatory Rudiments.

The course material follows the Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus for Basic Rudiments crossover syllabus.

The course is organised into seven topics:

  1. Pitch
  2. Rhythm & Meter
  3. Scales
  4. Intervals
  5. Harmony
  6. Recognizing Key Centres
  7. Transposition

Included in the program is a glossary of basic musical terms and signs.
