Enrolment is now open for Summer lessons for interested students. Students should plan on an accelerated program with minimally, a twice weekly lesson. We develop individual lesson plans for the summer term for students based on their abilities and goals.

Private Lessons - Pre Registration

Course Dates: Jul 06-Aug 05 2021, lesson times to be determined in consultation with the student.

Examination Dates:The 2nd weekend of August 2021

Course Fees: Summer fees are payable by the term based on $65/instruction hour. We develop individual programs for summer students based on their goals. 

We are accepting new private students for music theory and history. New students should pre register for lessons here. We will arrange a short Zoom meeting to discuss your goals and program.

To pre register:

  1. create an account
  2. enrol in this program.
  3. Upload previous RCM exam results if applicable

Students under 16, please have your parent or guardian create your account on your behalf.

All private online lessons are conducted via Zoom

Programs:

  • Beginners Theory-Levels 1 though 5: For music students without any theory background. 
  • RCM Level 6 Theory Prerequisites: Beginners Theory
  • RCM Level 7 Theory Prerequisites: Level 6 Theory
  • RCM Level 8 Theory Prerequisites: Level 7 Theory
  • Comprehensive Theory: For music students without any theory background who wish to write RCM Level 8 theory exam. 
  • RCM Level 9 Harmony Prerequisites: Level 8 Theory
  • RCM Level 10 Harmony & Counterpoint Prerequisites: Level 9 Harmony
  • RCM Level 9 History Prerequisites: Level 8 Theory
  • RCM Level 10 History Prerequisites: Level 9 History, Level 9 Harmony
  • RCM ARCT Studies:  Prerequisites: Level 10 History, Level 10 Harmony.

Student Responsibilities:

  • Must be computer literate, able to create pdf documents from their homework, etc.
  • Obtain required course material
  • Complete assignments in a timely manner
  • Ask questions when they have them
  • Sign-up for online private lessons when they need extra help

RCM Level 9 Harmony - Pre Registration

Course Dates:Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jul 06-Aug 05 2021 - section times TBA

Please Note:  This program demands mature, disciplined students with a strong academic record. Please ensure students understand fully the expectations and pre-requisites before registering

Examination Dates:The 2nd weekend of August 2021

Course Fee: $480 (pre registration is free)

Maximum Enrolment 4 students, new sections will be made available based on demand

Prerequisites: Level 8 Theory, 85% or better final grade completed within the last two years, recommended minimum age: 14. Students will be asked to upload proof of this requirement

Workload: Two two-hour lessons per week plus homework

Required Materials:

  1. Celebrate Theory Level 9 Harmony
  2. Official Assessment Papers (Practice Exams), most recent edition.

Both are available online through:

 http://bookstore.rcmusic.ca/ your local music store, or Amazon.

Course Description:

This group-lesson harmony course follows the Royal Conservatory of Music's syllabus for Level 9 Harmony.

The program covers traditional four-part writing for all diatonic chords, dominant seventh chords, functional and root/quality analysis of short passages from the Common Practice Period, as well as simple form analysis.

Students prepare for their RCM exam by attending a group online lesson via Zoom, complete short exercises in the lesson, and complete homework to be uploaded before their next lesson.

Enrolment:

  1. Create an account. Parents of students younger than 16 should create the account on the student's behalf.
  2. Enrol in this pre registration program and upload proof of pre-requisites
  3. We will arrange a short meeting via Zoom
  4. Enrolment instructions will follow acceptance into the program
  5. Purchase the required materials.
  6. Students planning on writing an R.C.M. exam are responsible for their own registration.

Description:

A block of five - one hour private weekly lessons held within a 90 day period. Lessons are conducted via Skype or Zoom.

Age Requirement: ages 14 and up

Fees: $350

Enrolment Period: 90 days

This program is suitable for music theory students ages 14 and up, self-studying at Level 8 RCM theory and beyond who need extra help, or perhaps would like some feedback on their practice exams. Students who are preparing for their college or university music theory entrance exams may consider this option as well.

New students: please register for a free trial lesson before enrolling in private lessons. We will discuss your goals, how I can help you, and choose a lesson time once I've had a chance to meet with you.

Programs:

  • Level 8 RCM theory and history through ARCT level
  • College and university level music theory entrance exam preparation
  • College and university level music theory tutoring

We accept ongoing enrolment.

A one hour private weekly lesson beginning the week of September 06, 2021 and ending mid January, with time off during Winter Break. All private online lessons are conducted via Skype or Zoom. This program is suitable for music theory students ages 14 and up, studying at Level 8 RCM theory and above.

New students: Pre registration information will be posted in August 2021.

Students should plan on two terms of study for each of the programs listed below. We will assume that the agreed lesson time chosen in Term 1 will continue for Term 2.

Age Requirement: ages 14 and up

Programs:

  • Comprehensive Theory: For music students without any theory background who wish to write RCM Level 8 theory exam. 
  • RCM Level 9 Harmony Prerequisites: Level 8 Theory
  • RCM Level 10 Harmony & Counterpoint Prerequisites: Level 9 Harmony
  • RCM Level 9 History Prerequisites: Level 8 Theory
  • RCM Level 10 History Prerequisites: Level 9 History, Level 9 Harmony
  • RCM ARCT Studies: ARCT students should enrol under this program.

We recommend a 45 minute private lesson for music theory students ages 10 to 13, studying at Levels 6-8 RCM theory level.

Students will be asked to purchase texts and practice exams corresponding to their program of study. We use the RCM Celebrate Theory series, available from your local music store and online.

A 30 minute private weekly lesson beginning the week of September 06, 2021 and mid January, with time off during Winter Break. Lessons are conducted via Skype or Zoom.

We recommend a 30 minute private lesson for music students ages 8 to 10, just getting started in music theory. We will work at the student's pace and abilities. Students may choose to write the RCM Level 5 theory exam when they are ready.

Students will be asked to purchase texts corresponding to their program of study. We use the RCM Celebrate Theory series, available from your local music store and online.
